Crop Labelling and Mapping Project

Brief

Milsat Technologies Limited, in collaboration with NASA Harvest, executed a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing the precision of crop-type mapping. This led to the commencement of the ‘Helmets Labeling Crops Project’, centered on the deployment of advanced and scalable data collection technologies.
These technologies facilitated the annotation of geo-referenced points within agricultural fields, enabling their integration with satellite imagery for subsequent activities such as crop type classification.
The main aim of this project was to enhance the precision of crop-type mapping resulting in accurate crop type naming and classification.

On the Ground: Capturing and Mapping

  1. GoPro cameras to capture images of farmlands were mounted on motorcycle helmets, which were given to local motorcycle riders to journey through vast farmlands.
  2. With the cameras capturing multiple images of farms and crop types, the Milsat Enumeration pad captured the precise geolocation of each individual farmland that was surveyed.
  3. To ensure seamless oversight of the acquired dataset, the Enumeration Dashboard was employed to apply geotags to street-level images. Also these points were integrated with satellite imagery for subsequent crop type classification.

Key Insights

  • This project highlighted the use of geospatial technology in agriculture and the flexibility of Milsat’s technologies in diverse sectors and fields
  • 1,000+ images captured
  • 25 square miles of farmland covered
